THE EASIEST CREPE RECIPE EVER

Classic ham and cheese crepes are one of my favourite go-to breakfast options, along with kefir pancakes, fermented steel-cut oats, and Croque-Madames.

The crepe batter is a cinch to make and the options for fillings are seemingly endless.

I also have a lot of fun making crepes because I get to flip them in the pan, which you can see me demonstrate in the recipe video. This is particularly entertaining for me when I have guests over for breakfast because I feel like I’m putting on a show for them.

Have you ever tried flipping anything while you cook? Julia Child said it best about flipping, “You just have to have the courage of your convictions”. See for yourself!

APPLE TURNOVERS FOR WHEN AUTUMN TUGS AT YOUR HEART

Few things get me as excited as the change in seasons.

Whether it’s the first dusting of snow; the budding trees in spring; or the heady fragrance of lilac; the transition into autumn has its own magic.

It’s when the garden is bursting with good things to eat and preserve.

Dusk comes earlier, the grasshoppers fly, and the crickets give their last encore.

When the calendar flips open to September and school is back in session, the apple orchards start opening for business.

The time has come to get cozy.

The candles come out, the tea kettle sees more action, and you have a yearning to bake.

Flaky Kefir Milk Biscuits With Cheddar and Thyme (an easy skillet recipe)

August 20, 2019 by Sylvia Rose 7 Comments

These kefir milk biscuits are wonderfully flaky. Made with cheddar and thyme, this easy skillet biscuit recipe is sure to be a hit!

I like carbs. Give me a crusty loaf of sourdough bread or a rustic rye and I’m a happy gal. The local bakery is one of my happy places, and that’s what usually sits on the kitchen counter if I haven’t baked a loaf myself.

On weekends, bread plays an important part at the breakfast table, which is why I was distressed one Friday evening when I realized we were going into the weekend bread-less.

“It’s fine,” my husband reassured me, waving his hand. “I’m going to make biscuits in the morning,”.

“You’re going to make biscuits?” I echoed, dumbfounded. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “That’s ambitious of you.”

“Nah, it’s fine,” he insisted, waving his hand nonchalantly.

To my shock and awe, he set about to work the following morning and whipped up a batch of breakfast biscuits.

So I decided to make them better.

With kefir.

The Spicy Green Caesar Smoothie (a powerful fibre-packed green smoothie)

August 13, 2019 by Sylvia Rose Leave a Comment

This  spicy green caesar smoothie is not your average green smoothie. Blend this up to get in your daily servings of vegetables and a zesty kick to jumpstart your day. It’s everything your body craves!

IS A SPICY GREEN CAESAR SMOOTHIE LIKE AN ACTUAL CAESAR?

First off, the spicy green caesar smoothie is missing almost all of the elements that make a real caesar cocktail. For one, there’s no tomato clam juice, nor is there Worcestershire sauce, nor Tabasco. Not even vodka. “How dare you!” you might say hotly, your finger pointed accusingly at me. “That’s not a caesar, that’s cocktail appropriation!”. Well, yes, but let’s not be hasty! Allow me to make my plea.

Kefir Pancakes for Breakfast

July 16, 2019 by Sylvia Rose 4 Comments

These plump kefir pancakes will make you swoon (especially if you’re a fan of buttermilk pancakes!). Learn how to make these wonderfully fluffy breakfast favourites from scratch!

golden milk kefir pancakes

I love buttermilk pancakes as much as the next person. Throw blueberries into the mix and you can find me lining up with a plate in one hand and maple syrup in the other. I don’t make buttermilk at home though. If I had a goat or a cow, I probably would, but as it stands, I live within city limits and while I might get away with a little goat (that’s the dream), I think a cow would get noticed. So there you go, I don’t make buttermilk, but I do make milk kefir. I make a lot of it, in fact, and always have a couple of jars waiting for me in the fridge. Here’s my post on how to make your own milk kefir at home if you want to experience that kind of abundance.

THE BENEFITS OF HOMEMADE OATMEAL

Growing up, a big pot of cinnamon raisin oatmeal frequently made an appearance on the breakfast table. I was a lucky kid.

Oatmeal is nutritious, it’s filling, it’s easy to make, and best of all, it’s cheap. It’s one of those slow burning fuels that keeps you going all morning and doesn’t make you come crashing down before noon.

Of course, not all oatmeals are made equal. Those sugar laden packages of artificially flavoured instant oatmeal aren’t anyone’s friend. I’m looking at you, smiling quaker!
