Meet Sylvia from Vintage Kitchen Vixen

Welcome to my little corner of the internet! Vintage Kitchen Vixen is where I passionately document a delicious vintage-inspired, simple living lifestyle.

simple living in the garden

Growing up, I bounced between the countryside and small towns, so I’m a country girl at heart. I’ve been living in the city since 2010, but my dream is to have a homestead. The idea of collecting fresh eggs every morning and having goats follow me around is thrilling.

I also crave a giant garden that will keep me flush with food all winter long. For the time being, I am content with learning how to garden, preserve food, and expand my knowledge of old-fashioned skills.

Harbouring a soft spot for warm, cozy, nostalgic feelings, I do everything possible to create that vibe every single day. Gathering loved ones together and sharing a good meal achieves that. So does spending time in the kitchen. Getting a new ferment going, stirring gently simmering pots, and breathing in gorgeous aromas make me swoon. So do the frequent taste tests!

I also adore all things vintage: clothes, cars, music, and movies. Dolling myself up in curls and victory rolls, winged eyeliner and a retro-inspired dress makes me feel polished and elegant. It’s a good way to stand out in a crowd, too! Don’t get me wrong, though, I spend plenty of time in jeans and ponytails!

ABOUT ME

Vintage kitchen vixen. Simple living, vintage recipes, vintage parties, german traditions, memorable gatherings.

I grew up in a German household and married into a Québecois family. Traditions are important to me, so keeping them alive in the kitchen and during holidays is pure joy.

I’m all about being frugal, too, but I’m not cheap if that makes sense. I like saving money by making my own natural cleaners, quartering whole chickens, and practicing these nifty frugal kitchen tips. The money I save goes towards buying quality ingredients, like pasture-raised meat and eggs.

In 2012 I earned a diploma in Baking and Pastry Arts. I briefly worked in the pastry field but didn’t care for the taxing schedule. It’s brutal! Always be kind to bakers.

Having an insatiable sweet tooth, I delight in whipping up scrumptious desserts. To balance it out, I am highly health-conscious and place a big emphasis on vibrant, whole foods. Raw, probiotic-rich fermented foods like homemade sauerkraut and my chilli lemon carrot sticks are a must!

Being outside is one of my favourite things, too. I can’t seem to get enough fresh air, so I take every opportunity to be outdoors. Most of my fixes come from gardening, yard work, long walks, and trail hiking. I’m also not opposed to relaxing by the lake or hanging out on the beach with a good book!

FUN FACTS ABOUT ME

I love baking

I’ve been a bookworm all my life. In 2010 I started keeping track of every single book I read because I’m a nerd like that.

I spend my days running around after two young boys. They’ve taught me that life is a balancing act!

Archaeology fascinates me. I even took part in an archaeological survey and excavation in Southern Italy in 2008!

Television doesn’t interest me very much. I used to be a T.V. junkie, but these days the only thing I seem to watch is Little House on the Prairie. It’s hard to find wholesome entertainment, so I mostly tune into my favourite YouTubers.

I have a cat, but does he ever stink! I almost always had a cat growing up, but this is the first feline I have to hold my breath around.

THANK YOU FOR STOPPING BY THE KITCHEN!
